Shuttle Sewing
Frequently Asked Questions...
The upper thread on my sewing machine keeps jamming into the bobbin and shuttle case?
Not an expert sewer here but I can run a straight hem, which is what I have been doing lately. I never change the stitch length, width or tension. As I prepared to run a seam, within a couple of stitches, the machine knocked and stopped. There was a bunch of thread on the back of the piece. I cut it out, removed the bobbin and case and cleaned everything. I cannot pick up the bobbin thread with the upper needle! No matter what I try, it won't pick up. I got it to pick up once and as I started to sew the seam, it stopped with a bunch of thread on the back again. Took everything apart, cleaned it again, cannot pick up the bobbin thread. Not only does the machine stop but when I take it apart, the upper thread is all tangled inside the bobbin case. I keep the area open so I can see what is going on and when the upper needle is being brought down, the thread is tangling throughout the bobbin case/shuttle. After using this with no problems, I really don't know what I have done.
Answer:
First thing I'd do after cleaning the machine is to put in a brand new needle (make sure it's the right way around -- backwards needles don't pick up well, and if they do, they skip stitches when sewing).
Take all the thread off the machine and rethread from scratch, manual in hand. Make sure the machine is threaded with the presser foot up and the thread gets into the tension disks. Make sure the bobbin case is properly threaded and latched into position. Fetch up the bobbin thread and sew, remembering to hang on to the thread ends as you start a seam.
I did a series of photos of what minor misthreading did to stitching: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/22521551 The photos are in pairs, top and bottom views of the same fabric piece. Blue thread on top, red in the bobbin. I'll bet yours looks like the fourth or fifth pairs.
